A New Restaurant Is Coming to Virgin Voyages, and It’s Not a Cuisine We ‘Sea’ on Many Ships

If there is one thing Virgin Voyages has consistently nailed since the Scarlet Lady first touched water, it’s the food. From a new take on casual dining without buffets, to cuisine made a la minute that actually rival whats you’d find in a major city. Until now, however, one of my favorite cuisines was missing.

This May, following a scheduled dry dock, Valiant Lady is debuting a brand-new concept called Ariya. It’s being billed as the first "true Indian culinary sanctuary at sea," and honestly, looking at the details, it’s a move that makes perfect sense for the brand.

A Meaningful Story Behind the Name

One of the things I love about Virgin is how they weave a bit of history into their concepts. The restaurant is named after Sir Richard Branson’s great-great-grandmother, Ariya, who was a traveler from Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu. The idea is that she believed a shared table could bridge any distance - a philosophy that Virgin indicates will be central to the dining experience here.

The Space: A Nighttime Transformation

Similar to how Lucky Lotus works on Scarlet Lady, Ariya will transform the Razzle Dazzle space into a 220-seat sanctuary every evening. While Razzle Dazzle will keep serving breakfast and brunch by day, the vibe will completely shift once the sun goes down.

The design is going to be heavy on texture and warmth—think grasscloth wallcoverings, hammered metal, and woven cane. They’re also including a semi-private dining area designed to look like the inside of a traditional jewelry box. To round out the atmosphere, there’s a feature bar with a DJ spinning everything from Bollywood hits to Punjabi pop, ensuring it doesn't lose that high-energy Virgin feel.

Regional Flavors and "Chaat" Heartbeat

For the menu, Virgin partnered with Chef Maneet Chauhan and Indie Culinaire for a focused, regional approach rather than a generic "greatest hits" menu.

The "heartbeat" of the menu is Chaat - that tangy, crispy, satisfying street food tradition. From there, there will be some impressive-sounding dishes:

  • Malabar Coconut Crab Cake
  • Goan Curried Mussels
  • Lamb Shank Biryani
  • Tandoori Pistachio-Crusted Snapper
  • Puffed Rice & Avocado Chaat (a great plant-based option)

The Spice Route in a Glass

We've always admired that unlike some lines that have very similar bar experiences across the ship, Virgin has provided truly unique offerings to fit each space - and that continues in Ariya. Every meal will start with a complimentary "welcome sip" of jaljeera, a chilled tamarind and cumin blend to wake up the palate.

The cocktail list continues the theme with items like the Bangalore Old Fashioned (using jaggery and cardamom) and the Saffron & Silk (scotch with toasted coconut smoke). For those who prefer to skip the alcohol, there’s a botanical zero-proof drink called The Seventh Leaf, plus a traditional chai tea service.

My Take

Virgin Voyages was already ranked #1 for dining by U.S. News & World Report this year, and adding an Indian concept feels like the right evolution. It fills a gap in the current lineup and leans into the bold, spice-forward flavors that Sailors have come to expect from places like Pink Agave or Gunbae.  I am really looking forward to seeing the full menu, as I'd expect more vegetarian dishes at an Indian restaurant, and one occupying the space of vegetarian-forward Razzle Dazzle.

Ariya is set to debut on Valiant Lady this May. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how the space transition works in person and, more importantly, getting a taste of that Lamb Shank Biryani. Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the launch (and I scramble to book something on Valiant)!
